The issue of a US military base in the region has been ongoing for several years. An official report has even been prepared

In December, US authorities are expected to make a decision on establishing a permanent military base in Poland, sometimes referred to as “Fort Trump”. Wrocław, Poznań, Bydgoszcz and Szczecin have been identified as potential locations. It is worth recalling that back in 2018, Poland’s Ministry of National Defence submitted a proposal to the United States to establish a permanent military presence in the Kuyavian-Pomeranian region.

The document, entitled “Proposal for a U.S. Permanent Presence in Poland”, outlines a proposal to station an armoured division in the region. The document is publicly available, meaning that we have access to its contents.

The advantages highlighted in the report include the presence of NATO institutions in Bydgoszcz (including the Joint Force Training Centre), the availability of a civilian airport and numerous smaller airfields across the region, as well as infrastructure associated with the aviation industry (Military Aviation Works No. 2). Other advantages include the proximity of the Polish Navy base in Gdynia and the US Consulate in Poznań, along with good transport links to Germany. The report also points to the presence of 15 hospitals, 7 universities and 2 international schools in Bydgoszcz and Toruń.

As for the advantages offered by the rest of the region, the report highlights a large military training area located south of Toruń (larger in area than the city’s built-up zone), as well as an artillery training centre. It also mentions the proximity of military units stationed in Grudziądz and Brodnica, together with the 56th Combat Helicopter Base in Inowrocław.
