Tuesday marked the second day of competition at the Virtus European Summer Games, which are being held in Poland for only the second time in history. This year’s host city is Bydgoszcz, with events taking place at several venues, including Zawisza Stadium, Astoria Sports Hall, the Kazimierz Wielki University (UKW) facilities, and the cycling courses in Myślęcinek.
„These are European Games, but in addition to athletes from across Europe, we have also welcomed invited competitors from Australia and Israel,” said Agnieszka Szewczyk, who is responsible for the athletics competition on behalf of the Polish organiser, Sprawni Razem. Athletics alone features 160 competitors, while more than 600 athletes from 21 countries are taking part in the Games across Bydgoszcz.
The Games include competitions in swimming, table tennis, tennis, athletics, cycling, rowing, and handball.
„Virtus brings together athletes with intellectual impairments. Many of these competitors also participate in the Paralympic Games,” Szewczyk explained.
The first Virtus Summer Games held in Poland took place in Kraków in 2022. Following the success of that event, the international federation quickly decided to award the Games to Poland for a second time, with Bydgoszcz chosen as the host city.
„Bydgoszcz has always been welcoming to athletes. It offers outstanding sports facilities, making it an ideal location for staging major sporting events.”
