The Vistula measures about 160 centimeters at the Fordon gauge – if there were plans to launch the ferry crossing in Solec Kujawski at the start of the May holiday period, the river level would be too low. This clearly shows that we are dealing with a persistent phenomenon of low river levels.
Everything indicates that this will be the third consecutive year in which the Vistula in Fordon remains around 1.5 meters, while a high level is considered to be above 5 meters. In a few weeks, these levels may drop even further, possibly approaching one meter, as happened last year. A frosty winter briefly allowed the river to exceed 3 meters, but now, just a few weeks later, it has returned to low readings, even though temperatures are still relatively low. However, the problem may already be a deficit of precipitation.
For a year now, we have been trying to obtain a scientific diagnosis of what we have been observing year after year, but there are no experts willing to clearly explain what is happening. In previous years, the section between Włocławek and Toruń experienced hydrological drought, which may return this year—the current situation could be a result of it. However, it is not only about the Vistula itself, but also about the smaller rivers that are its tributaries.
