Bydgoszcz Police have announced the arrest of a 46-year-old woman and a 34-year-old man who may be connected to an incident on August 14, when a 14-year-old girl and a 12-year-old boy were allegedly assaulted near the railway station for speaking Ukrainian. The two detainees are currently being questioned and other investigative activities are being carried out at one of the police stations.
The incident was reported on Monday, August 17, by the Consulate General of Ukraine in Gdańsk. According to the information provided, a man and a woman initially insulted the children, used vulgar language and threatened them because of hostility based on their nationality. The confrontation then escalated into physical violence. “They twisted the child’s arm, destroyed a toy drone and threw pieces of it at the boy, causing scratches.”
A PR Problem
The case was reported in a news dispatch by the Ukrainian news agency Interfax, prompting dozens of media outlets outside Poland to cover it. The fact that adults allegedly attacked children adds to the seriousness of the incident. Numerous posts have also appeared on social media, including on X, which do not contribute to a positive image of Bydgoszcz.
Next Monday, August 24, at 5:00 p.m., a group of Bydgoszcz residents is organizing a demonstration against violence toward Ukrainians. The gathering was registered several days before Saturday’s incident, in response to growing tensions and antagonism in recent weeks.
